EFN & NUC partner to integrate esports in Nigerian universit

The Esports Federation of Nigeria and the National Universities Commission have begun discussions on integrating a structured academic esports framework into Nigerian universities, in a move both parties say could position Nigeria as a continental leader in digital innovation.

The meeting, held at the Commission’s headquarters on Thursday, focused on the objectives, implementation strategy and expected outcomes of the proposed framework within the Nigerian University System.

Federation President Yahaya Maikori was represented by Vice President Clinton Agbor, alongside board members Ikechukwu Okoye and Ifeanyi Elumeziem.

Areas identified for development include esports research, gaming psychology, digital behaviour studies, artificial intelligence in gaming, immersive technology, virtual and augmented reality innovation, and African game development.

Both parties said the framework would also introduce structured policies covering academic balance, mental health monitoring, anti-addiction safeguards, professional coaching, player welfare systems and ethical competition standards.

The Federation and Commission expressed confidence that the partnership would encourage research, creativity and technological advancement across tertiary institutions while helping Nigerian universities evolve into centres for innovation in emerging digital fields.
