General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Tanko Musah, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to address the rising incidents of attacks on teachers in the country.

The warning follows an alleged brutal assault by military personnel on three teachers and a civilian at Adiewoso M/A Basic School in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

According to the Wassa West District branch of GNAT, the victims were allegedly beaten by soldiers believed to be from the 2nd Infantry Battalion at Apremdo in Takoradi.

Speaking on the incident with TV XYZ, on May 7, 2026, Tanko Musah expressed strong outrage and warned of drastic action if the matter is not addressed promptly.

GNAT demands probe into alleged assault on teachers by soldiers

“We are saying it is unacceptable and within two weeks, if nothing happens, we’ll descend there and the state should be blamed for whatever happens. Because we cannot be in a state where teachers are vulnerable. They are being beaten by students, parents, and some community members, and now some military people have come to join, and nobody is talking. Why?” he fumed.

“In two weeks, if nothing is done, this country will come to a standstill. We shall do it. If the country has to come to a standstill for this matter to be addressed, then so be it. It doesn’t matter; it’s a promise we are giving them. If this matter is not resolved in two weeks, the state must take whatever happens. It is the responsibility of the state to protect everyone. If the state is not doing it, then GNAT shall take this matter up,” Tanko Musah added.
