Ghana National Gas Company has announced an emergency shutdown of its Gas Processing Plant following the failure of the Burner Management System controller for the Heat Medium System.

In a joint statement with Ghana Grid Company, the company said preliminary assessments indicate the affected system is damaged and requires full replacement. The fault led to an immediate halt in operations and a temporary reduction in gas supply to thermal power plants.

The disruption in gas supply has affected electricity generation, with some thermal plants unable to operate at full capacity, leading to power outages in parts of the country.

Ghana Gas said engineers are working to replace the damaged system, while technical and safety assessments continue to determine how to restore operations.

“Subject to the outcome of ongoing assessments, Ghana Gas will commence processes to restore operations in the course of today,” the statement said.

The Corporate Affairs Directorates of Ghana Gas and GRIDCo apologised for the inconvenience and appealed to the public for patience, adding that updates will be provided as the situation develops.

The Burner Management System is a safety component that controls the ignition and operation of burners in the Heat Medium System, which regulates temperature in gas processing.
