Accra, April 10, GNA – Madam Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, Acting Executive Secretary, Energy Commission, has called on the energy audit professionals to play a leading role in advancing energy efficiency and sustainability in the country.
She said Ghana’s growing energy demand must be matched with deliberate efforts to promote efficiency and responsible consumption.
Speaking at the 2nd Energy Audit Certification and Awards Ceremony on the theme “A Greener Ghana: The Role of the Energy Audit Professional,” she described the event as a milestone in Ghana’s transition towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
Madam Bondzie noted that rising energy demand, driven by economic growth, required a more responsible and efficient use of energy resources.
She explained that energy efficiency, often described as the “first fuel,” remained the most cost-effective and cleanest way to meet energy needs, yet was still underutilised.
“Energy audit professionals are not just technicians; they are problem solvers and change agents who identify inefficiencies and provide data-driven solutions to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact,” she added.
She indicated that the Commission, established under the Energy Commission Act, 1997 (Act 541), was mandated to regulate and promote the efficient use of energy and renewable technologies across all sectors.
The Acting Executive Secretary said the certification and training of energy audit professionals formed a critical part of efforts to build the human capacity needed to drive Ghana’s energy transformation.
She stressed that as Ghana moved towards implementing energy performance certification for buildings, professionals would play a key role in evaluating energy use in residential, commercial and industrial facilities.
Madam Bondzie said their work would help reduce electricity demand, lower energy costs for businesses and households, and ease pressure on the national grid, while supporting climate action efforts.
She added that their role aligned with the government’s broader economic reset agenda, which sought to promote sustainable growth, improve energy efficiency and enhance national development.
She urged the newly certified professionals to uphold high standards of integrity and professionalism, continuously upgrade their skills and champion energy efficiency in their respective fields.
Professor John Gartchie Gatsi, Board Chair, Energy Commission, announced plans to make energy audit certification mandatory as part of efforts to promote efficiency and responsible energy use in Ghana.
He said the move would ensure that energy audit professionals played a more active role in shaping consumption patterns and guiding both households and industries towards more efficient energy use.
Prof Gatsi urged certified professionals to carry out their duties diligently to achieve the objectives of the programme.
He explained that effective energy auditing would help consumers better understand their energy usage, enabling them to plan, control consumption and reduce costs.
“When energy professionals do their work well, it helps people manage their energy budgets and make savings,” he said.
Prof Gatsi added that energy audits could also have financial benefits, noting that compliance with energy efficiency standards could influence lending decisions and potentially reduce interest rates on loans for infrastructure upgrades.
For the Sustainable Energy Management Professional category, the Best Male Student award was presented to Mr. Daniel Kudjoe Jnr Dogbey, while Madam Mavis Adjei Anim was adjudged Best Female Student.
In the Sustainable Energy Audit Professional category, Mr. Peter Boafor emerged as Best Male Student, with Madam Reina Kutriye Bagina receiving the Best Female Student award.
For Energy Audit Practical, the Best Student award was presented to Mr. Mireku Kumah Kwame.
All the awardees are electrical engineers and technicians who applied for the programme and distinguished themselves through outstanding performance, earning top honours in their respective categories.
