Govt to explore polymer alternatives in talks with producers

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has indicated it will explore alternatives to imported polymers in discussions with sachet water producers on Wednesday, April 8, amid efforts to curb rising production costs in the sector.

The move follows the suspension of a planned price increase that was due to take effect today, after talks between government and industry stakeholders.

The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) had earlier proposed higher prices, citing a global polymer shortage and rising production costs linked to geopolitical tensions, particularly the US–Iran conflict. Proposed rates included GH¢8 at ex-factory level and up to GH¢15 at retail.

Speaking on Citi Prime News on Monday, April 6, Chief Commercial Officer at the Ministry, Kofi Addo, said the government aims to balance a healthy business environment with consumer protection.

“Yes, they have raised an issue concerning the polymers. We will discuss with them and look at opportunities available. Who knows, there may be other alternatives to the polymers. Who knows whether we have some of these ingredients in the local market. Whatever it takes, government is committed to engage the manufacturers and producers to make sure that this issue is addressed amicably,” he said.

Mr Addo added that the Ministry is committed to ensuring any resolution does not disrupt supply or place undue burden on consumers.
