Ghanaian football legend Rev. Osei Kofi has weighed in on the ongoing debate about the future of the Ghana national football team, urging authorities to consider reappointing Kwesi Appiah as head coach.
Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, the former Black Stars player expressed strong reservations about the idea of hiring a foreign coach, particularly a white coach, insisting that such a person would first need time to understand Ghana’s football identity.
“If we bring a white coach, the person will have to first come and understudy, but for Kwesi Appiah, he knows our brand of football already. It will help Ghana if we go and beg him to come back,” he stated.
Rev. Osei Kofi emphasized that Appiah’s familiarity with the team and the Ghanaian football system gives him a significant advantage over any potential foreign appointment.
He further highlighted Ghana’s abundance of football talent but lamented the lack of unity and structure within the current squad. According to him, the issue is not the absence of quality players but rather the inability to build a cohesive team.
Drawing from a past conversation with former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Osei Kofi underscored the importance of maximizing potential regardless of limitations.
“God has blessed Ghana with a lot of talents. ‘Just look at my stature,’ President Kufuor told me. ‘My achievements do match my body size.’ Right now we have players, but we don’t have a team,” he added.
