Students of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) have emerged winners of the 2026 Commonwealth Day Debate Competition held at the Parliament of Ghana as part of activities marking the annual celebration.

The debate competition, organised by the Parliament of Ghana in collaboration with the STAR Ghana Foundation, brought together universities from across the country to debate issues relating to governance, parliamentary practice and democratic participation.

At the end of the competition, UniMAC secured the first position after an impressive performance, beating teams from several top universities, including the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana (UG).

The final rankings were announced as follows:

1st – University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC)
2nd – Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)
3rd – Central University
4th – University for Development Studies (UDS)
5th – University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), Wa
6th – University of Ghana (UG)

The UniMAC team was represented by Titus Owusu Darko and Precious Agrobesa Akos, who delivered a strong performance during the debates to secure victory for their university.

The Commonwealth Day Debate forms part of initiatives aimed at exposing students to parliamentary procedures, legislative debate and democratic governance, while encouraging critical thinking and public policy discussions among young people.

The competition also forms part of broader efforts to strengthen youth participation in democratic governance across the Commonwealth.
