Global legal research and ranking organisation Legal 500 has formally launched its Nigeria GC Power List, recognising outstanding in-house lawyers driving innovation, governance and strategic growth across the country’s corporate landscape.
The Nigerian edition of the GC Powerlist 2026 was hosted in Lagos by Bloomfield LP, which described the ceremony as a necessary platform to spotlight general counsel shaping corporate governance and strengthening Nigeria’s business environment.
The dinner event, held at the Metropolitan Club in Victoria Island, Lagos, brought together leading in-house lawyers and senior corporate legal executives for the formal unveiling of the 2026 list, a global recognition platform celebrating top-performing general counsel across major jurisdictions.
Speaking at the event, Bloomfield LP partner, Mr Adedoyin Afun, said the firm was proud to host the Nigeria edition of the Powerlist, describing it as a celebration of excellence within the in-house legal community.
“We are hosts of the Legal 500 GC Powerlist Nigeria edition,” Afun said. “The event is targeted at general counsel across corporate organisations and agencies.”
In his address, Afun described the general counsel as pivotal to Nigeria’s economic stability and institutional progress.
“You are the progress drivers. You are the legal centre of the Nigerian economy,” he said.
He noted that general counsel lead legal strategy across financial institutions, energy companies, telecommunications firms, infrastructure providers and multinational corporations.
“You are the quiet force behind the energy that lights our world. You ensure that connectivity never goes dark. You sit at the helm of financial fortresses of power and dreams,” Afun said.
Describing them as “architects of the new Nigeria,” he added, “You guide corporate governance. You shape legal frameworks. You are woven into the fabric of Nigerian life. Without you, the game stops.”
Afun stressed that in-house lawyers serve as custodians of professional integrity and institutional honour.
“As lawyers, we are defined not just by the deals we close, but by the values we uphold,” he said. “Integrity is the foundation of the legal profession. Where professionalism is weak, justice suffers.”
He also reflected on Bloomfield LP’s growth since its establishment in 2017, thanking corporate legal departments for their trust and partnership.
“When we started in 2017, we dreamed of serving giants across sectors. Today, we support clients across international law and multiple industries,” he said. “Many of you trusted us when we were building.”
Afun acknowledged the significant responsibility borne by general counsel, particularly in managing regulatory risks and financial accountability.
“We know the heavy weight you carry, the keys and budgets you hold for your various units,” he said. “We do not take for granted the value you bring. We thank you for the opportunity to serve.”
Also speaking at the unveiling, Legal 500’s Global Business Development Manager, Mr David Freeman, described the launch as a milestone for both the organisation and Nigeria’s legal market.
“It’s super exciting to be here in Nigeria and to be launching this catalogue,” Freeman said.
He noted that Legal 500 has researched the global legal market for more than 35 years, building a reputation for authoritative analysis of law firms and in-house legal teams.
“The GC Power List is all about recognising key individuals that drive change, show innovation and act as leaders in the in-house function,” he said.
Freeman observed that the role of in-house counsel has evolved significantly worldwide, becoming increasingly influential within corporate structures.
“As we’ve seen around the world, the in-house role continues to change and become more and more influential, which prompts us to do more research into the in-house legal space globally,” he said.
He described the GC Power List series as a leading global platform for recognising corporate legal leaders.

Emphasising Nigeria’s importance within Africa’s legal landscape, Freeman described the country as a “superpower” in terms of its legal market.
“It was really important for me to come to Nigeria tonight,” he said. “We recognise the importance of this jurisdiction, and it’s important that we continue to research and dive deeper into the market.”
Freeman announced that the Nigerian edition of the GC Power List is now live online.
“The GC Power List in Nigeria is launched now on Legal500.com,” he said. “We have over five million unique users worldwide, so your profiles are now accessible to a global legal audience.”
According to him, Legal 500’s research team conducted interviews with selected general counsel in Nigeria to understand their priorities, achievements and challenges.
“Our editor has been speaking to many of you over the last few weeks, uncovering insights about your goals and what keeps you up at night,” he said. “That forms part of our key research findings.”
Freeman congratulated the honourees, describing their inclusion on the list as a mark of international recognition.
“You are joining a global community of leading general counsel around the world,” he said.
He also thanked Bloomfield LP for hosting the event and encouraged deeper engagement with Nigeria’s legal community.
“We’re keen to get feedback, engage more with the market here and strengthen our activities in Nigeria,” Freeman added.
