South Africa have looked like a completely different team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. After losing the bilateral series to India, they have made a strong comeback by playing confident, tactical and fearless cricket. The Proteas have been carrying the tag of being “chokers” for a long time. This tag solidified even more after their 7-run loss in the 2024 final against India. However, this time, the Proteas have returned to the subcontinent with a clear purpose.

As South Africa head into the semi-final at Eden Gardens against New Zealand on the 4th of March, the feeling around this team is different. They are unbeaten, confident and tactically sharp. Their pace attack featuring Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch and Macro Jansen gives them options in all conditions. The top order is aggressive, especially with Quinton de Kock striking at nearly 190. Keshav Maharaj and George Linde also serve as important players leading the spin attack.

Their comeback was clearly visible against India in Ahmedabad during the Super 8 stage. South Africa faced early trouble as they were reduced to 20/3 in four overs; Jasprit Bumrah striking with the new ball for India. The Proteas refused to panic. Both David Miller and Dewald Brevis played powerful knocks. Their 97-run partnership changed the game completely. Later on, Tristan Stubbs finished strongly with an unbeaten 44 off 24 balls to take the total to 187/7. The bowlers then took over. Jansen picked up 4/22 and Ngidi kept things tight, as India were bowled out for 111.

South Africa dominated and were in total control in the match against the West Indies. Even when the West Indies recovered from 43 for 4 to 176, they looked calm and composed. During the chase, Markram and de Kock attacked from the start, racing to 69 without loss in the Powerplay. De Kock set the tone, while Markram remained unbeaten on 82 to seal a nine-wicket victory in the 17th over. The chase looked easy because the intent was clear from the first ball.

South Africa’s match against Afghanistan in Ahmedabad yet again showed their strong and confident approach. After scoring 187 runs with contributions from de Kock and Ryan Rickelton, the game went into a double Super Over. Even under huge pressure, the Proteas stayed calm. Players like Tristan Stubbs and Miller delivered at the right time, and captain Markram made the brave decisions, trusting Keshav Maharaj with the ball in the second Super Over.

South Africa look well-balanced, focused and full of belief. After winning several high-pressure matches, the Proteas are ready to handle the nerves against New Zealand in the semi-finals. This game is important not only to continue their strong run but also to finally move past the “chokers” tag. Temba Bavuma led from the front in the 2023-2025 World Test Championship cycle, setting an example of strong leadership. Now, the responsibility lies with Markram to guide the team towards the T20 World Cup win.
