Ghanaian digital satellite television channel, Akwaba Magic, has assured viewers of more exciting back-to-back local productions as it celebrates its fifth anniversary.

The 24-hour general entertainment channel, owned by MultiChoice Ghana Limited, says it remains committed to promoting authentic Ghanaian storytelling while supporting the growth of the country’s creative industry.

The anniversary launch, held on Monday at the MultiChoice Ghana head office, brought together key industry players, including actors, directors, producers, technical crew members and emerging talents, to celebrate five years of what many describe as a game-changing platform for local content on DStv.

Launched in March 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Akwaba Magic was established to provide a stable, high-quality platform dedicated entirely to Ghanaian content. Over the past five years, the channel has produced hundreds of hours of drama series, reality shows and movies, while also licensing content from independent producers across the country.

Managing Director of MultiChoice Ghana Limited, Alex Okyere, explained that the vision behind the channel was to fill a critical gap in Ghana’s media landscape.

“Our goal has always been to create a consistent platform where Ghanaian stories, languages and talent can shine, reflecting our cultural identity and giving filmmakers a dependable space to showcase their work,” he said.

Actors have also acknowledged the channel’s impact on the industry. Film actor Jessica Larny recalled the challenges creatives faced before Akwaba Magic’s introduction, particularly during the COVID-19 period when production activities slowed and opportunities were limited.

Speaking at the event, Head of Channel for Akwaba Magic, Nosisa Doe, noted that the channel has firmly established itself as a cultural force.

She said the platform has helped re-ignite local storytelling by blending tradition with contemporary relevance. Productions such as House of Klu, Nana Akoto, M’asaase, and Sika Boto have vividly portrayed Ghanaian life, bridging generations and strengthening shared pride in the country’s cultural identity.

The Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, James Gardiner, praised the channel for energising Ghana’s creative ecosystem. He noted that its investment in original productions has created jobs, boosted confidence among creatives and provided both emerging and established talents with a reliable platform to innovate and thrive.

Beyond entertainment, stakeholders say Akwaba Magic has played a key role in reviving pride in Ghanaian storytelling and strengthening the country’s presence within the African entertainment landscape.

As it steps into its next chapter, the channel has pledged deeper collaboration with local producers and renewed investment in original content to further expand the global reach of Ghanaian stories.
