Ghana’s national pension fund is moving well beyond its traditional role as a monthly cheque issuer, announcing a special loyalty card and telemedicine service designed to cut costs and broaden healthcare access for the country’s more than 261,000 pensioners.

Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwesi Afreh Biney, unveiled the plans at the 2026 Pensioners’ Engagement held in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, describing them as a deliberate effort to reimagine retirement welfare in Ghana.

The centrepiece of the announcement is a pension card that will entitle holders to discounts at partner supermarkets, hotels and retail outlets nationwide. Biney said negotiations with service providers were at an advanced stage, and that the programme, though outside SSNIT’s core mandate, was designed to ease the rising cost of living for retirees.

“By simply being a SSNIT pensioner, you receive preferential rates. It is our way of saying thank you as we seek to improve the value proposition of the Scheme,” he said.

Alongside the discount card, SSNIT is finalising a telemedicine channel that will connect pensioners to medical professionals via telephone and digital platforms. The initiative targets retirees in rural and underserved communities where specialist healthcare remains hard to reach, and is being developed in partnership with the Trust Hospital and other clinics around the country.

Biney also announced that a mandatory annual Pensioner Certificate renewal policy takes effect from April 2026, a measure intended to keep beneficiary records accurate and reduce fraud within the system.

The Trust currently disburses pensions to more than 261,000 beneficiaries, having paid out over GH¢5.77 billion in pensions during 2024 alone. Biney assured contributors that funds remained secure and that investment strategies were being continuously reviewed to deliver returns that outpace inflation.

Northern Regional Chairman of the National Pensioners Association of Ghana (NPAG), Njaawura Issah B. Yahaya, welcomed the package, saying the combination of healthcare access and shopping discounts would meaningfully reduce out-of-pocket expenses for retirees. He urged young workers to begin contributing to SSNIT early and cautioned against misinformation that could undermine public confidence in the scheme.
