Assin Odumase (C/R), Feb 21, GNA- The Assin Odumase Restoration Child and Youth Development (AORCYD), in collaboration with Compassion International, has presented100 barrels valued at GH¢80,000.00 to 100 farmers to boost irrigation systems.

Pastor Simon Ameadedonu, Member of the AORCYD, who spoke on behalf of Rev John Evans Arthur, the association’s leader, explained that the initiative was to support farmers to develop and use simple irrigation system in the food production cycle.

He emphasised the importance of reliable, all year-round water systems made available to farmers, especially in an era where climate change was having devastating effects on human activities including farming and food production.

Significantly, he was of the view that the country could not rely on rain-fed agriculture, as some of farmers do not have any means to safeguard their farms if the rains failed.

For this reason, he said farmers were being equipped with 250-litre water barrels with lock system to aid in watering their farms to increase yields.

Mr Iftikhar Ahmed Fenyo, Project Coordinator noted that his organisation would continue to initiate projects to help increase food production in the district with reliable, efficient and sustainable water systems that farmers could depend on all year round for production.

This he said would help farmers enhance their income and livelihoods through increased production, and at the same time address the perennial shortages of some food crops in the country.

The beneficiary farmers are mostly parents, whose wards are being sponsored by Compassion International.

Mr Fenyo admonished the farmers to use the barrels for the intended purpose to make like better for them and their wards.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the organisation and promised to use the barrels efficiently.
