As reported by Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine

Kenya has expressed official concern over Russia’s recruitment of its citizens to participate in the war against Ukraine. The country’s Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi announced a visit to Moscow to demand an end to this practice.

The Center for Countering Disinformation at the NSDC of Ukraine reported on this event, citing information from official Telegram channels.

Context and dynamics of recruitment

Experts note that recruiting foreigners from African countries has become a systematic tool of Russia’s policy in its war against Ukraine. Most recruits do not have combat experience; they are promised legal and well-paid work, but after signing contracts they are often sent to the most dangerous parts of the front.

According to agencies, four Kenyans who recently returned from the front with injuries said that one expected a sales job, two – security positions, another – to participate in sports competitions as part of military service. In total, over the last two months more than 30 Kenyans have been evacuated from Russia.

The Center for Countering Disinformation at the NSDC also notes that the Kremlin uses foreign recruitment as a way to compensate for losses on the front and to reduce social tension within Russia. Such actions contradict the Kremlin’s propaganda line in Africa and indicate the use of Africans as resources in its aggressive war against Ukraine.

As previously reported, the Russian Federation is intensifying its propaganda efforts in Africa: planning to establish centers for cooperation with African bloggers and to develop Russian television broadcasting on the continent.
