Alhaji Dauda Fuseni, the newly elected President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), has called for a comprehensive rebranding and reorganisation of the federation’s administrative and technical structures to align with international best practices.
In an exclusive interview, Fuseni stressed the importance of a strong amateur foundation, insisting that every boxer must progress through the amateur ranks before turning professional. He also emphasised the need for special attention and structured guidance for juvenile boxers.
“Even those who do not make it into the national teams must gain experience at the amateur level before turning professional,” he said.
According to Fuseni, a solid amateur background equips boxers with the discipline and technical skills needed to succeed in the professional ring. He praised Ghana’s emerging boxing talents who have recently won African titles or earned recognition from international sanctioning bodies.
As part of his development agenda, Fuseni announced that the GBF will organise two annual individual national championships each year. The first edition is scheduled to take place in Accra from January 29 to February 1, 2026, and will be open to all amateur boxers from strawweight to super heavyweight.
“We are building a new Black Bombers team for the Commonwealth Games, and we want to give the best boxers the opportunity to represent the nation,” he noted, adding that the two finalists in each category will be selected and placed in camp to prepare for upcoming competitions.
Fuseni urged coaches and boxers across the country to fully cooperate with the GBF as it rolls out its programmes, describing his administration as one built on teamwork and results.
He also appealed to corporate Ghana to invest in boxing, expressing confidence that such partnerships would yield positive returns.
In his additional role as President of Africa Zone 2 (West Africa), Fuseni revealed plans to introduce an international boxing league aimed at keeping fighters active and competition-ready.
Meanwhile, Fuseni recently appeared on Omashi TV’s Big Fight Night programme alongside newly crowned IBF Continental Africa featherweight champion John Abaja Laryea. During the show, Laryea shared his personal journey, recounting how leaving his parents at a young age to pursue boxing transformed his life, instilling discipline and purpose. He also described meeting his manager, Sammy Anim Addo, as a turning point in his career.
Laryea disclosed that he plans to defend his title within the next three months and is targeting a future shot at the WBA version of the belt.
