Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Thursday, January 22, 2026, paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Sports and Recreation as part of her ongoing tour of selected ministries after one year in office.

She was welcomed by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, who described the visit as timely and motivating.

He noted that the engagement would further energise the ministry’s efforts in advancing the government’s reset agenda.

Adams presented an overview of the ministry’s achievements since the administration assumed office.

These include hosting major international tournaments, securing medals across multiple sporting disciplines and confirming Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He also appealed for increased investment in sports infrastructure, financial mobilisation ahead of the World Cup, and the timely release of funds to sustain development efforts.

The minister further briefed the Vice President on steps taken toward operationalising the Sports Fund, revealing that a board would be inaugurated to help address long-standing funding challenges in the sector.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between her office and the ministry.

“I want to assure you that our doors remain open to you and don’t wait till there is a problem, just come let’s have a chat, especially in preparation of bills.

“We are better placed to offer support and if there are things to review we are there because we want your suggestions to go through and we have your back,” she said.

She expressed keen interest in athlete welfare and safety, stating that “people don’t need to suffer based on the discipline they have chosen.”

The Vice President also welcomed progress on the Sports Fund, encouraged the exploration of multiple revenue streams and commended the ministry for enhancing Ghana’s global image through sports.
