Netflix Sept. 9 announced an expanded slate of South African series and films as the streamer marked 10 years since launching in the country.

Netflix said its South African productions have supported more than 8,000 jobs through partnerships with more than 30 local production companies since the service debuted there in 2016. The company unveiled the new slate at a showcase in Johannesburg attended by Netflix executives, filmmakers and talent.

“Ten years ago, we set out to share South African stories and voices with the world and today, we are proud to strengthen our partnership with the local creative industry and continue creating exciting stories that will entertain our members in South Africa and around the world,” said Ben Amadasun, VP of content for Netflix Middle East and Africa.

More than 300 South African titles have been made available on Netflix over the past decade, with productions filmed across 20 cities in eight provinces.

Among the streamer’s recent South African successes is “The Polygamist,” which Netflix said generated more than 24 million views in its first weeks, reached the Top 10 in 62 countries and ranked No. 1 in more than 21 countries. The series is based on Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s 2012 novel of the same name. Netflix said sales of the book tripled following the series’ debut.

Other South African Netflix titles have included “Blood & Water,” “Young, Famous & African,” “Unseen,” “Silverton Siege,” “Fatal Seduction,” “Disaster Holiday,” How to Ruin Christmas, Beauty and the Bester, Marked, Kings of Joburg,” “Blood Legacy” and “Umthetho.”

The newly announced slate includes a second season of “Blood Legacy,” due Sept. 25, as well as “Seriously Single Too” and “Another Disaster Holiday,” both scheduled to debut later in 2026.

Netflix also confirmed that second seasons of “Tuiskoms and Marked,” along with the film sequel Meet the Khumalos 2, are in various stages of production.

The streamer is also expanding its “How to Ruin” franchise with How to Ruin Diwali: Meet the Parents, scheduled to debut Oct. 30. Produced by Burnt Onion Productions in collaboration with producer Jayan Moodley, the comedy centers on an interracial couple whose engagement brings together two families from different cultural backgrounds.

Netflix also announced new partnerships with additional South African production companies, including several unscripted projects.

Dineo and Zothile “Solo Ntsizwa” Langa will host Love Is Blind: South Africa, produced by afrOkaans and scheduled for release later this year.

Also coming later this year is wedding docu-soap “Stars & Vows: Anele and Buzza,” from Dopezuluboi Productions in co-production with BrightFire Productions.

BrightFire is also developing a new dating reality series that Netflix said will be announced at a later date.

Netflix said the latest slate reflects its continued use of commissions, acquisitions and licensing deals with South African creators and production companies as it expands locally produced programming for both domestic and international audiences.
