South Africa starts review of effects of global OTT platforms on domestic market

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has announced an inquiry into the impact of over-the-top (OTT) media and communication services. The review will examine how global platforms such as Netflix and WhatsApp affect existing licensees and the broader national regulatory framework. In a Government Gazette notice, Icasa formally announced the multi-phase inquiry under Section 4B of the Icasa Act 2000.
