‘Sukura: The Home Coming’ emerged as the biggest winner at the 2026 Ghana Movie Awards, securing seven awards and cementing its place as one of the year’s most successful Ghanaian films.

Produced by Janet Ayesu and Edmund Dankyi, the film took home the prestigious Best Picture award and dominated several major categories during the ceremony.

Janet Ayesu was named Discovery of the Year, while Kalsoume Sinare won Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. The production also earned technical honours, with Kofi Asante winning Achievement in Cinematography, Godwin Mensah (Vegas) receiving Achievement in Production Design, and Lydia Ashitey taking home the award for Achievement in Make-up and Hairstyling.

The film’s success was further boosted when Deyemi Okanlawon won Best Actor African Collaboration for his performance in Sukura.

The awards ceremony, held under the theme, “Rewarding African Excellence”, brought together filmmakers, actors and industry stakeholders to celebrate outstanding achievements in African cinema.

Speaking after the awards, producer, Janet Ayesu, expressed appreciation to the cast, crew and supporters who contributed to the film’s success. She described the recognition as a testament to the hard work, passion and commitment of everyone involved in the project.

Co-producer, Edmund Dankyi, also praised the team’s achievement, noting that the film’s success highlights the growing impact of African storytelling on the global stage.

Written by award-winning writer Oheneba Ahenkan Amoah, Sukura: The Home Coming tells the story of an African-American who embarks on a journey to reconnect with his ancestral roots in Africa. Through themes of identity, family, culture and resilience, the film has resonated with audiences and critics alike.

With seven awards to its name, ‘Sukura: The Home Coming’ was undoubtedly the standout production of the night, setting a high standard for Ghanaian cinema and reinforcing the industry’s growing reputation both in Africa and beyond.
