As part of efforts to deepen the partnership aimed at transforming public sector health finance and accountancy education in Ghana, a delegation from the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA), has visited the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) following the launch of stakeholder consultations for the Phase 2 of a Global Fund-supported initiative.

The delegation was led by PAFA Chief Executive Officer, Alta Prinsloo. Other members of the delegation were the PAFA Director of Effective Professional Accountancy Organisations, Evelyn Mwapasa, and the Head of PAO Development at IFAC, Darlene Nzorubara.

Welcoming them, ICAG President Augustine Addo reaffirmed ICAG’s commitment to delivering sustainable outcomes and expressed appreciation to IFAC and PAFA for their continued support in strengthening Ghana’s accountancy profession.

The move, he said was to help ensure donor compliance, value-for-money, and financial stewardship in an increasingly complex funding environment.

Under Phase 2 is an integration of a Training of Trainers component to help create a multiplier effect across Ghana’s public health system.

Present at the meeting were other ICAG management members including the CEO Eric Oduro Osae, Vice Chair of the Examinations Committee and Council Member, Dr. Yao Gbadago and the Vice Chair of the Training Committee and Council Member, Mr. Thomas Esso.

The Head of PAO Development at IFAC, Darlene Nzorubar noted that with donor funding involved in health expenditure in many developing countries, the competencies being built are critical for accountability and compliance.

The delegation also engaged the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Audit Service, Controller and Accountant General’s Department, and ICAG’s online examination service providers. The consultations will inform implementation strategies and strengthen inter-agency collaboration.

The ICAG CEO, Eric Oduro Osae stated that Ghana’s implementation will serve as a model for Liberia and Sierra Leone, where the project is also being rolled out and that lessons from Ghana will be evaluated to support similar interventions across Africa.

The PAFA Chief Executive Officer, Alta Prinsloo described the initiative as a pioneering intervention with potential for regional expansion.

She proposed establishing a Community of Practice for health sector finance professionals to share innovations and implementation lessons across the continent.
