The Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has assured the Mamprugu Traditional Council and the people of Ghana that he will discharge his duties with fairness, neutrality and impartiality if approved by Parliament.
Ayariga gave the assurance when he appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for his vetting on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in response to concerns raised by the Mamprugu Traditional Council regarding his ability to remain neutral in the performance of his responsibilities.
The petition from the traditional council had placed particular emphasis on the minister-designate’s relationship with the Mamprugu traditional area and sought assurances that such ties would not compromise his objectivity in matters involving chieftaincy and local governance.
In addressing the concern, Ayariga acknowledged his longstanding connection to the Mamprugu traditional area, explaining that his relationship with the people of the area goes beyond political or professional considerations.
He noted that his maternal background is Mamprusi and that members of the Mamprugu community have played an important role in his upbringing and personal development.
According to him, that relationship has instilled in him values that would guide his conduct in public office.
“My mother is a Mamprusi, and they are my uncles, and they are partly responsible for my upbringing and training me. If I fail in this new job, then it means that there is a defect in the way they have trained me and I believe that they trained me well and I will vindicate them by living up to their expectations.
“I can promise my grandfather, the Nayiri that in my capacity as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, I will definitely live up to his expectations.”
