The MTN Ghana Foundation has expanded its agricultural empowerment programme to cover 300 direct beneficiaries, committing GH¢1.2 million to train 160 smallholder women farmers and 140 unemployed youth in modern farming practices across the Greater Accra Region.

The expanded scope was announced as part of activities commemorating the 2026 International Women’s Day under the theme “Give to Gain,” and builds on the Foundation’s earlier launch of a model farm at Pantang Hospital in the La Nkwantanang Municipality. The model farm is being developed in collaboration with the La Nkwantanang Municipal Agriculture Department and Defarmercist, providing specialised agronomic support and capacity building to participating women farmers.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, said the initiative fulfils the company’s commitment to establishing a hands-on training platform in modern agricultural practices for women in the municipality. She noted that participants are expected to transfer knowledge gained to their communities, and that the Foundation intends to replicate the model across Ghana.

“The first cohort of 30 unemployed youth is undergoing training at the Vegetable Hub of Excellence at the University of Ghana, Legon Farms,” Wiafe said.

The Vegetable Hub of Excellence at the University of Ghana was established by the MTN Ghana Foundation in partnership with the University of Ghana School of Agriculture and Defarmercist as part of the Foundation’s smart farming pilot programme.

Lydia Aku Fiatuho, Head of the Agriculture Department at the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly, welcomed the initiative, noting that women represent more than half of Ghana’s agricultural workforce. She urged beneficiaries to take ownership of the project and commit to its long-term sustainability.

The MTN Ghana Foundation, established in November 2007, focuses on health, education, and economic empowerment, and has undertaken 178 major projects across Ghana since its inception.
