The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that since the outbreak of Mpox began in May 2025, the Ministry of Health, through the Ghana Health Service, has activated a coordinated multi-sectoral response aimed at interrupting transmission and protecting public health.
He explained that while 880 cases had been confirmed as of November 25, 2025, the latest update as of March 3, 2026 shows that Ghana has recorded 1,038 confirmed cases and eight deaths. A total of 124 districts across all regions, representing 45.51%, have reported cases, with Greater Accra Region and Western Region being the most affected.
Addressing Parliament of Ghana on 9 March, Mr Akandoh said the response measures include strengthened coordination and emergency operations, intensified surveillance and contact tracing with a 21-day follow-up, and sustained laboratory testing. Mild cases, he noted, are being managed through supervised home isolation or treatment in designated facilities.
He added that risk communication and community engagement efforts have also been intensified through public education campaigns.
On vaccination, the minister said reactive vaccination has been implemented in identified hotspots.
“Ghana has received 33,600 vaccines from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. So far, 31,231 people in affected communities across 12 districts have been vaccinated,” he said.
Mr Akandoh also noted that the government has ensured that the medical bills of patients are covered by the state and will not be borne by the patients.
