Michael Kayode happy for Nigerian support, wants Italy call-

Brentford defender Michael Kayode has declared his desire to represent Italy at senior level while acknowledging the widespread support he receives from Nigerians, saying he is proud of his heritage.

The 21-year-old right-back, who was born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents, has represented the Azzurri at under-18, under-19 and under-21 levels and is considered provisionally cap-tied to the four-time world champions. He would require a one-time change of association to switch allegiance to Nigeria.

Kayode is on the radar of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, but has made clear that earning a senior Italy call-up remains his primary ambition, with the Azzurri facing Northern Ireland in the 2026 World Cup playoffs this month.

Speaking to The Athletic, Kayode said consistent performances at club level would be key to forcing his way into the Italy reckoning.

“For every player, it’s a dream to be in the national team, especially now because of the qualifications for the World Cup. I really hope we qualify. It’s important to do very well at the club because if you don’t do well at your club, you don’t get a call-up. So I just think about Brentford, and if I get the opportunity, that’s it,” he said.

Despite his Italian aspirations, Kayode expressed warmth towards his Nigerian supporters.

“I’m happy that the Nigerian people are happy for me. The opportunity to play for both is amazing,” he added.

Kayode, who scored the winning goal in the 2023 European Under-19 Championship final for Italy, is also noted for his distinctive long-throw ability at Brentford.
