Queiroz blasts VAR after controversial England draw

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has launched a scathing attack on the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team following Ghana’s goalless draw against England at the FIFA World Cup, insisting his side was denied a clear penalty and a potential red card.

The incident occurred when England defender Ezri Konsa appeared to challenge Ghana forward Prince Adu Kwabena with a high foot as the striker raced through on goal in a one-on-one situation.

Queiroz was left furious that the referee was not advised to review the challenge on the pitch-side monitor.

“I’m not sure VAR is working at the World Cup. I think they (the VAR referees) went for a coffee because it was a clear penalty and a red card. There’s no doubt about that,” Queiroz said after the match.

“Do you guys have any doubts about that, or was it only me that was in the game?”

The Portuguese tactician believed the decision could have had a major impact on the outcome of the Group L encounter, with Ghana creating several dangerous moments against the Three Lions.

Despite his frustration, Queiroz praised his players for their discipline and commitment as the Black Stars secured a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites.

The result leaves Ghana well-placed in the race for a place in the Round of 32 with 4 points, with the Black Stars set to conclude their group campaign against Croatia on Saturday.
