President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Women’s Development Bank, a flagship policy of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is in the final stages of implementation.

Speaking during his 69th Independence Day address on Friday, March 6, at the Presidency, President Mahama said the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and her team were working tirelessly to bring the initiative to fruition.

“I am also pleased to announce that we are in the final stages of setting up the Women’s Development Bank. This work has been under the leadership of our hard-working Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang,” he said.

The Women’s Development Bank, first outlined in the NDC’s manifesto ahead of the 2024 general election, is intended to create a dedicated financial institution providing women with access to credit facilities and soft loans to support their enterprises.

President Mahama highlighted the critical role women play in Ghana’s informal economy, noting that access to affordable credit has historically been a major barrier.

“Our women entrepreneurs have historically been the backbone of Ghana’s informal economy, and yet too many of them face barriers to affordable credits,” he stated.

He added that the bank would offer more than just financing, providing mentorship and tailored business support to strengthen women-led enterprises.

“This Women’s Development Bank will provide accessible financing, mentorship, and business support that is tailored to women-led enterprises. When women succeed, families thrive, and nations prosper. Women of Ghana, we are committed to investing so that you realize your full potential,” he said.
