MP, five others killed in Kenya helicopter crash | APAnews

Six people were killed Saturday when a commercial helicopter crashed in western Kenya, authorities said, including a sitting member of parliament.

The speaker of Kenya’s parliament, Moses Wetang’ula confirmed the death of Johana Ng’eno, a Kenyan MP, by the accident.

Nandi County police Commander Samuel Mukusi told local media that those killed were the legislator, the pilot and four other passengers.

President William Ruto issued a statement mourning the victims.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, the people of Emurua Dikirr, and all the victims and families affected by the helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County,” Ruto wrote,

Authorities did not immediately release the names of the other passengers. Investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.

The aircraft went down in Nandi County in the North Rift region. Officials said the cause of the crash had not yet been determined.

According to local media, the helicopter had attempted an emergency landing before bursting into flames amid foggy weather and poor visibility.
