FAAN cashless payment rollout causes airport traffic delays

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has urged motorists and airport users to be patient following traffic congestion at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on the first day of its nationwide Go Cashless programme.

FAAN, in a post on its X handle on Sunday, said the gridlock resulted from many drivers attempting to register for the new Go-Cashless cards at the toll lanes despite prior notices and publicity encouraging early registration at its designated offices.

“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria sincerely appreciates all motorists and airport users as the Go Cashless Programme officially comes into full operation today at MMIA and NAIA, in line with the Federal Government’s directive on cashless transactions.

“We acknowledge the traffic build-up experienced at the access gates today. Despite the wide publicity, notices, and repeated announcements issued ahead of the commencement date, a significant number of motorists opted to register for their Go Cashless cards at the gates this morning,” the statement read.

FAAN acknowledged the temporary delays, noting that initial adjustment challenges are normal for major system transitions.

The authority said it has deployed extra personnel, increased registration points, and enhanced on-ground coordination to ease traffic flow.

The Go Cashless initiative, which prohibits cash payments at access gates, car parks, and executive lounges, aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s drive to promote digital transactions.

Piloted since late 2025 in Lagos and Abuja in partnership with Paystack, the programme aims to improve processing speed, transparency, and operational efficiency while reducing risks associated with cash handling.

FAAN advised motorists to obtain Go-Cashless cards at FAAN commercial offices, access gates, or participating bank branches and plan ahead for future visits.

The authority reassured the public that ongoing monitoring and adjustments will ensure smoother operations in the coming days.

“We appeal for your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we work diligently to stabilise and streamline the process,” FAAN said, reiterating its commitment to providing a safe, efficient, and world-class airport experience.
