The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has announced a new initiative designating every Wednesday as a day for wearing Fugu, also known as Batakari, in a move aimed at promoting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

In a statement dated February 10, 2026, the Ministry said the initiative seeks to encourage Ghanaians both at home and abroad to embrace the traditional attire in its diverse designs and styles.

“The government has decided to encourage all Ghanaians to dedicate every Wednesday to the wearing of Fugu in all its diverse forms,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry, the initiative is part of broader efforts to deepen cultural consciousness and reinforce Ghana’s national identity on the global stage.

“This initiative is meant to affirm our identity and project Ghana’s heritage with pride to the world,” the statement added.

Beyond its cultural significance, the Ministry noted that the policy is expected to deliver economic benefits by supporting local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders involved in the production and distribution of Fugu.

“It will empower players across the value chain and create more business and employment opportunities nationwide,” the statement explained.

The government also expressed optimism that the initiative will foster national unity and stimulate growth within the creative economy.

“This collective embrace of Fugu will strengthen national unity and serve as a symbol of our cultural confidence,” the Ministry said.
