Donald Kipkorir Hints On Who Told Winnie Odinga To Run For The Senate Seat
Lawyer Donald Kipkorir has weighed in on Winnie Odinga’s decision to seek the Nairobi senatorial seat, suggesting that the move carries the blessing of her late father. According to him, wherever Winnie chooses to go politically, it is exactly where Raila Odinga wanted her to be.
Kipkorir described her as her father’s daughter, a remark that frames her entry into the race as a continuation of the Odinga legacy rather than a fresh personal ambition. He did not say whether Raila had spoken to her about the Senate seat before his death, and he gave no details to back the suggestion. It is his own reading of her political path.
The comment arrives as Winnie’s bid continues to draw attention in the capital. Since announcing her interest, she has become a major talking point in Nairobi politics. Her name carries weight among ODM supporters, many of whom still hold the late Raila in very high regard and see his children as the natural custodians of his influence.
Her candidacy has also attracted a challenger from within the party. Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalango, has said he will beat her in the ODM nominations and win the seat in 2027, even if she moves to another party. That has set the stage for what could become a lively contest.
Kipkorir’s remarks are likely to please her supporters, who will read them as an endorsement of her place in the race. Critics, on the other hand, may argue that a family name alone should not decide who goes to the Senate. Nairobi voters will have the last word when the time comes.
