Revealed: How Intelligence Report Made Uhuru Miss Raila’s Anniversary
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s last-minute absence from the first anniversary of Raila Odinga’s death in Bondo has raised questions after sources in his camp linked his decision to intelligence reports received ahead of the event.
Uhuru had been expected to attend the October 15, 2026, commemoration as the chief guest. Preparations for his arrival were already underway, with his advance team in Bondo and a seat reserved for him on the VIP dais. His flight was reportedly ready to depart from Wilson Airport in Nairobi by 10am.
However, the former President did not arrive at the airport, leaving many wondering what had changed at the last minute.
According to sources in Uhuru’s camp, intelligence reports contributed to his decision not to travel to Bondo. The contents of the reports were not disclosed, and there was no official confirmation that a specific security threat had been identified. Consequently, the precise circumstances behind his withdrawal remain unclear.
Uhuru’s spokesperson, Kanze Dena-Mararo, confirmed that his schedule had changed but offered little additional information. She told Sunday Nation that an issue requiring his attention had arisen, without explaining its nature.
His absence attracted attention partly because of his close political association with Raila in the latter years of the former Prime Minister’s career. Their historic handshake in March 2018 transformed Kenyan politics after the disputed 2017 election, bringing together two leaders who had previously stood on opposing sides.
Uhuru also supported Raila’s unsuccessful presidential bid in 2022, putting him at odds with his then deputy, William Ruto.
The anniversary gathering subsequently became a subject of political debate, with some leaders criticising Uhuru’s withdrawal. National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed expressed surprise at the former President’s absence, noting that a seat had been reserved for him.
Meanwhile, Raila’s widow, Ida Odinga, urged political leaders not to turn the family commemoration into a contest over political loyalties.
The reported intelligence information offers a possible explanation for Uhuru’s decision, but without further official details, the precise reason for his last-minute withdrawal remains unconfirmed.
