A victim of the fire outbreak speaking to the media

FIRE HAS gutted a town hall trading facility in the mining town of Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region, destroying scores of shops and items that were stored in them.

The inferno, according to numerous eyewitnesses’ reports, started around 11 p.m. on Saturday when the shop owners had closed from work and deserted the building.

The exact cause of the inferno was not immediately known, but it’s reported to have spread at a lightning speed, consuming shops and items that were in them.

The blaze was said to have caused extensive damage to the huge town hall trading facility before spreading to about 30 containers.

The Obuasi Municipal Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Perpetual Koomson, stated that no casualties were recorded.

“The dangerous fire has made the town hall structure very weak now, so have to demolish it as soon as possible to help prevent another disaster at the scene,” she said.

Meanwhile, some residents of Obuasi who witnessed the fire outbreak have showered praises on the firefighters. “Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service who rushed to the scene deserve commendations for their great work to quench the fire,” some of the people disclosed.

According to them, getting access to the fire scene was difficult, as several shops had blocked the road, but the firefighters still managed to stop the blazing fire.
