The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has said she is working towards building a better Nigeria that she would enjoy in her old age.
Tinubu, who spoke in Owerri, Imo State on Wednesday, while presenting empowerment items to women in the South-East, said she would be 66 years old this month and needed the prayers of Nigerians as she continued to support the development of the country.
She particularly appealed to Catholic mothers to continue praying for her and President Bola Tinubu, expressing optimism that Nigeria would emerge stronger under the current administration.
“I want to enjoy Nigeria in old age, so I’m working. That’s why we are doing all we do right now,” she said.
The First Lady also asked the Catholic women to sustain their prayers for the President and the country, saying their support was important to the success of ongoing efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.
The empowerment programme, implemented through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, is part of a nationwide women empowerment initiative expected to benefit 18,500 women across the country.
She said the initiative was designed to provide women with productive assets to enable them to establish or expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
The beneficiaries were presented with items including deep freezers, freezers, maxi gas cookers with ovens, generators and industrial grinding machines.
Tinubu said the initiative was in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President, which prioritises inclusivity, economic growth and sustainable development, particularly through the economic empowerment of women.
She noted that empowering women was also critical to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 5 on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, and Goal 8 on decent work and economic growth.
The First Lady commended the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, for providing an additional 2,000 empowerment items for women in the state.
She said the governor’s gesture increased the number of beneficiaries in Imo from 500 to 2,500.
In appreciation of the additional beneficiaries, Tinubu announced that she would provide N100,000 to each of the 2,500 beneficiaries in the state, amounting to N250m.
She urged other state governors to emulate Uzodimma by supporting women empowerment initiatives in their respective states.
Tinubu charged the beneficiaries to use the items and financial support judiciously, describing them as a foundation for building better lives for themselves and their families.
She prayed for the success of the beneficiaries, saying, “I hope and pray that what you receive today will prosper in your hands in Jesus’ name.”
The First Lady also thanked Governor Uzodimma and his wife for their warm reception and support for the programmes of the administration’s women empowerment initiatives.
