Madaraka Express Passengers Can Use Mobile Money Details to Retrieve Tickets, Kenya Railways Says

Kenya Railways Corporation has revealed how passengers can retrieve their Madaraka Express tickets when they fail to receive a ticket number after making payments through mobile money.

The clarification followed concerns from members of the public who claimed that they did not receive a ticket number after paying through the online booking system.

According to the passenger, the online system failed, and he was directed to make the payment through a mobile money paybill.

However, after completing the payment, he said he did not receive a ticket number, leaving him concerned that his money had been lost.

Responding to the issues raised, Kenya Railways confirmed that the booking had been completed despite it not generating a ticket number.

According to the corporations, when the system fails to generate a ticket number, passengers can use the account number indicated in the mobile money payment confirmation message as the booking confirmation number.

“Your booking was successful. The account number in your mobile money confirmation message is your booking confirmation number,” Kenya Railways said.

Passengers who encounter a similar situation can use the booking confirmation number together with the mobile phone number used to make the payment to print their ticket at any Madaraka Express station.

The clarification means passengers who make successful payments but do not immediately receive a separate ticket number should check their mobile money confirmation message before assuming that the booking has failed.

Madaraka Express passengers can book SGR tickets by visiting the Kenya Railways Booking Portal to choose their travel details, select seats, and pay via mobile money.

At the same time, tickets can also be booked through USSD code by dialling *639# on your mobile phone for quick booking.

Also, the same tickets can be booked over the counter by visiting SGR stations with your original National ID or Passport.

Currently, SGR is available from Nairobi to Mombasa or on the return journey. However, SGR construction has begun from Naivasha to Malaba through Kisumu, with the works expected to be over by July 2027, when the journey will be available to those going to western Kenya.
