The Directorate of Health of the NDC Professionals Forum has welcomed the inauguration of a new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, describing the facility as a significant boost to Ghana’s specialised cardiovascular healthcare services.
In a statement signed by its Director of Health, Dr (Med) Aaron Kwame Antoh, the Directorate congratulated President John Dramani Mahama, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) on the commissioning of the facility.
The laboratory, which was inaugurated by President Mahama, is expected to strengthen the country’s capacity to diagnose and treat heart diseases through advanced cardiac procedures. According to the statement, the facility was completed in less than six months and forms part of a broader national plan to establish three cardiac catheterization laboratories across Ghana.
The Directorate noted that the project is expected to improve access to specialised cardiac care, reduce referrals for treatment abroad, and enhance survival outcomes for patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases.
“The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory demonstrates a strong commitment to delivering timely and quality healthcare infrastructure,” the statement said, adding that expanding such facilities across the country would enable more Ghanaians to access life-saving cardiac interventions closer to their communities.
The Directorate also commended the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for introducing measures to ensure the sustainability of the investment through the maintenance and repair of medical equipment.
It said the Fund’s decision to establish a subsidiary dedicated to equipment maintenance reflects an understanding of the need to preserve critical healthcare infrastructure to guarantee long-term service delivery.
The statement further praised President Mahama for what it described as his leadership and commitment to improving Ghana’s healthcare system, stating that the commissioning of the laboratory demonstrates the implementation of policies aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare.
It also acknowledged the role of the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for providing strategic direction in the health sector.
In addition, the Directorate recognised the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, for her contribution to the implementation of the project.
According to the statement, her stakeholder engagements and active supervision have helped advance the objectives of the Fund and the delivery of key healthcare interventions.
The Directorate said the commissioning of the laboratory demonstrates the impact of collaboration between government institutions and health sector stakeholders in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.
It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that improve healthcare delivery and expand access to quality medical services across the country.
The National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital serves as Ghana’s premier referral centre for the diagnosis and treatment of heart and thoracic diseases.
The addition of the cardiac catheterization laboratory is expected to enhance the Centre’s capacity to perform minimally invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, helping to improve treatment outcomes for patients with cardiovascular conditions.
