The Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei-Asare, has stated that the Auditor-General, throughout 2024, recovered nearly GH¢12 billion in disallowed expenditure.

Speaking at the launch of the 2025 Public Financial Management Compliance League Table, Madam Osei-Asare said the PAC had received the Auditor-General’s latest report and would begin public sittings on it later this year to ensure accountability for the management of public funds.

“We hope to sit on this later this year for the citizens to know the kind of work the Auditor-General has been doing in collaboration with the PAC to recover all the funds owed to the state,” she said.

Mrs. Osei-Asare commended the collaboration between the Auditor-General and the committee in enforcing financial accountability, noting that the recovery of disallowed expenditure demonstrates the importance of robust oversight of public institutions.

She, however, expressed concern over the persistent financial irregularities recorded in public institutions, describing many of them as avoidable.

“Many of the irregularities are preventable. It is not the case that the laws are not adequate; they are very adequate, but compliance is weak,” she said.

She urged public institutions to strengthen adherence to existing public financial management laws and regulations, arguing that improved compliance would significantly reduce infractions and safeguard public resources.

The Public Financial Management Compliance League Table is intended to promote greater transparency, strengthen compliance with public financial management laws, and encourage improved financial governance across state institutions.
