Accra, June 24, GNA – Ghana and Burkina Faso have successfully concluded a week-long bilateral engagement, culminating in the re-launch of the reaffirmation of their common international land boundary at Po in Burkina Faso.
A statement issued by the Corporate Affairs Unit of the Ghana Boundary Commission, stated that the engagements between the two countries began on June 15 and ended on June 22, 2026, featuring the inauguration of a 22-member Joint Technical Committee and the signing of official documents to guide the reaffirmation process.
The statement said those activities were conducted in line with three Framework Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding signed by the Foreign Ministers of both countries on February 20, 2026.
Speaking at the official ceremony, Mr. Kenneth Akibate, Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, described the outcomes as a testament to the determination of both states to transform their shared boundary into a symbol of cooperation and mutual development.
He emphasiSed the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and preventive diplomacy in advancing common interests.
Burkina Faso’s Governor of the Nazinon Region, Comrade Yvette Massadalou Nacoulma Sanou, echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the reaffirmation exercise was not intended to divide communities but to foster unity, serenity, and cross-border socio-economic development.
“The boundary is a line that unites us. Let us turn the borders into bridges of cooperation to develop our respective countries,” she stated.
Major General Anthony Ntem, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, commended stakeholders for their active participation, noting that the exercise demonstrated both countries’ resolve to ensure boundaries serve as shared spaces of opportunity, trade, and development.
He further urged local and traditional authorities to take ownership of the reaffirmation process.
The engagements also received technical and financial support from the GIZ/African Union Border Programme (AUBP).
Dr. Bakary SANOU, Head of Programme for GIZ/AUBP, praised the synergy between the two countries and assured continued support for the implementation of the agreements.
The reaffirmation exercise marks the commencement of technical works for the Ghana–Burkina Faso International Land Boundary and formalizes processes for regular consultations between regional, district, and local stakeholders on both sides of the border.
