By Christopher Tetteh, GNA

Fiapre, (Bono) Aug 25, GNA – The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has called for designated and specialised passenger seats for People with Disabilities (PwDs) to improve the nation’s public transport system.

Alhaj Mohamed Saaka Dumba, the President of CILT who made the call expressed worry that the nation’s transport system remained unfriendly to the PwDs.

He was addressing the opening session of the 2026 Conference and Annual General Meeting of the CILT, underway at Fiapre, near Sunyani.

Alhaj Dumba said it was also unfortunate that PwDs were mostly affected by traffic congestion, worrying that the present lack of traffic alarms was also dangerous for the PwDs.

The two-day conference is on the theme: “Transforming Ghana’s Transport Infrastructure for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth”.

Alhaj Dumba indicated that it was imperative for the CILT design strategic approach and to address challenges confronting the PwDs, children and the aged in society in accessing public transport.

Hence, the theme was to tackle those challenges and help implement disability laws, proposing solutions to real world problems in the nation’s transport sector.

Alhaj Dumba said the conference would therefore share experts’ knowledge and strategic dialogue for practical solutions pertaining to development challenges in the supply, logistics and the transport industry chain.

Nana Addae Kuntuma IV, the Nifahene (sub-chief) of the Sunyani Traditional Area urged the stakeholders to also consider the development of the nation’s air, marine, and rail transport system.

Odeneho Dr Afram Brempong III, the Paramount Chief of Suma Ahenkro and a Member of the Council of State, noted that transportation remained a critical enabler to drive economic growth and development.

He urged the participants to provide solutions towards addressing the challenges confronting the nation’s transport sectors.

Mr Vincent Antwi-Agyei, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, called for effective collaboration between the CILT and stakeholders in the transport sector.

He noted that Bono had considerable opportunities in agriculture, tourism and education; however, those prospects could not be harnessed without safe transport systems.
