The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has intensified its criticism of the decision to suspend the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), warning that the move could have far-reaching consequences for healthcare administration and emergency medical practice across the country.
The association argues that the suspension sends the wrong signal to healthcare managers who are often required to make difficult decisions under challenging circumstances to protect patients and save lives.
The controversy stems from the recent congestion crisis at the Accident and Emergency Centre of KATH, which prompted hospital management to implement emergency measures, including the temporary redirection of patients to nearby healthcare facilities.
The decision was intended to ease pressure on the overcrowded emergency unit and ensure that patients received timely medical attention in safer environments.
However, the decision led to the suspension of the hospital’s CEO by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, June 6, General Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Richard Selormey, questioned the rationale behind the suspension, insisting that the measures adopted by hospital management had successfully addressed the immediate crisis and improved patient care.
“The place was decongested and patients were being admitted again and so what problem are we seeking to solve with the suspension of the CEO? Are we trying to save the lives of the people by ensuring that they are seen in a timely manner, in a safe and humane manner or we should just continue piling patients on the ground and trolleys?
“Remember the trolleys belong to the Ambulance Service and so keeping trolleys at the hospital means holding ambulances at ransom. We think that the query and subsequent directive to suspend the CEO is moot and it holds a very dangerous precedent for healthcare practice, especially in emergency care in the country if we allow that to stand.”
