South African-born businessman Musk says Europe is jealous of Russia

His sentiments were geared towards sharp criticism of the European Union, accusing its officials of losing touch with the people they rule.

Errol Musk spoke with Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2026, questioning the EU’s direction and credibility in light of the continent’s mounting political and economic issues.

According to Musk, Europe is experiencing a leadership crisis, with governments losing the support of their constituents.

“Well, Europe’s position is very odd. I don’t think Europe has any direction anymore, they have no idea what is happening in their own countries, their government are not popular, in fact they are very unpopular, and yet they don’t resign.”

The South African-born millionaire also went further, criticizing the European Union itself, arguing that it no longer adequately represents the interests of ordinary Europeans.

“It’s a terrible situation that you’ve got there. The European Union represents nobody; it’s fake, and they are trying to pretend that they are not.”

His remarks also addressed ties between Europe and Russia, a difficult issue since the introduction of successive rounds of Western sanctions against Moscow.

“The people are not behind them, and you don’t want to let that happen here. You should be very grateful for what you have here in Russia, and you should not take notice of the sanctions and embargoes they put on Russia; they are jealous of Russia, that’s what I would say, and they would like to be like Russia.”

Errol Musk has developed a reputation for making outspoken pronouncements about world politics and global governance.

Speaking from Moscow, Musk stated that the effort focuses on “providing refugee status to South African farmers,” but failed to provide practical details.

According to Governor Aleksandr Avdeyev, the initiative, which has been reviewed with regional Russian officials, might result in the relocation of up to 50 households to the Vladimir region.

The plan is similar to a contentious program used by US President Donald Trump’s administration, which has resulted in almost 5,000 white Afrikaners being allowed as refugees to the United States since early 2025.

Washington defended the decision by claiming that Afrikaners were being persecuted in post-apartheid South Africa, something Pretoria firmly denies.

The South African government has repeatedly rejected any institutional prejudice against white farmers, claiming that crime in rural regions affects all populations.
