Germany to provide direct financial support for the Climate Change Action Now in Ghana

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space has indicated its readiness to provide direct financial support for the Climate Change Action Now (CCAN) initiative being implemented by the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), with discussions on the funding package currently underway.

The indication came during a high level climate dialogue at WASCAL’s headquarters in Accra on Friday , June 5, 2026, where the Head of the Department of Energy and Hydrogen Research, Sustainable Energy Systems, at the German ministry, Ms Annasi Kerstin, said that discussions on the proposed support were ongoing.

“We are pleased. I just got feedback yesterday that we can support CCAN itself, discussing some numbers, but we will work on that,” Ms Kerstin said.

She said addressing climate change required more than technological solutions and policy interventions, stressing the need for public understanding, dialogue and education.

The dialogue took place on World Environment Day, two days after a heavy rainfall triggered flooding in parts of Accra, submerging communities, disrupting business activities and damaging property.

The Executive Director of WASCAL, Prof. Emmanuel Wendsongré Ramdé, said the recent floods underscored the need to translate climate research into practical action.

“The impacts of climate change are no longer distant projections. They are realities affecting our people and our development pathways,” he said.

Prof. Ramdé said the effects of climate change were becoming increasingly visible across the region and called for greater efforts to convert research findings into practical interventions that could benefit communities.

Representing the Minister of State in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability, the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr Moses Ayamga, said the government was moving beyond policy discussions towards implementation.

He called on research institutions to provide practical scientific solutions capable of addressing challenges at the community level.

“We are shifting from the era of rhetoric to the age of rigorous practical implementation,” Mr Ayamga said.
