Egypt delivers first batch of $200m bus order to Ghana

ACCRA — The Egyptian Embassy in Accra has attended an official ceremony marking the arrival of the first batch of 100 Egyptian-made buses destined for Ghana’s public transport network.

The vehicles form part of a larger $200 million (£157 million) contract to import 300 buses for the Ghanaian state-backed transport company, Metro Mass Transit. The deal was brokered through an Egyptian manufacturing firm and its local partner, the Mansour Company in Ghana.

Ghana’s Vice President welcomed the shipment, extending her gratitude to Egypt and the private sector partners involved. She noted that the delivery represents a significant milestone in modernising Ghana’s public infrastructure. The new fleet is expected to immediately boost transit capacity and ease daily congestion for commuters.

Looking ahead, the Vice President expressed the Ghanaian government’s desire to see a higher percentage of locally manufactured components integrated into future bus orders.

The expansion of ties between the two nations looks set to continue beyond road transport. Ghana’s Minister of Transport confirmed that bilateral cooperation is expected to grow to include major projects across the railway, maritime, and aviation sectors.

The transport overhaul aligns with Accra’s broader national agenda to establish a robust “24-hour economy,” aimed at boosting productivity and driving sustainable economic growth.
