AfriCAN Ghana to commemorate Africa Day with campaign on water, sanitation, nutrition

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Ho (V/R), May 24, GNA – Africa Catalyzing Action for Nutrition (AfriCAN) Ghana will commemorate this year’s Africa Day on May 25 with a campaign aimed at promoting environmental protection, safe sanitation, clean water and good nutrition.

The campaign, themed “Our Water, Our Environment, Our Responsibility,” aligns with the African Union’s 2026 theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

Professor Francis Bruno Zotor, Country Director of AfriCAN Ghana, said the campaign seeks to raise awareness about the impact of unsafe water, pollution, poor sanitation and unhealthy lifestyles on public health, nutrition and sustainable development.

He noted that protecting water bodies, improving sanitation, and promoting healthy lifestyles were critical to safeguarding the future of communities across Africa.

“Unsafe water, pollution, poor sanitation and unhealthy lifestyles affect our health, nutrition and future. Together, we can protect our environment, improve community health, and build a sustainable future for all,” he stated.

Prof Zotor called on the public to support efforts aimed at protecting water resources, maintaining clean environments, promoting safe sanitation practices and encouraging good nutrition within communities.

Mr Nana Kwame Addi Bekoe, Youth Coordinator for AfriCAN Ghana, in an interaction with the Ghana News Agency, said Africa Day remained an important occasion for reflection on issues affecting the continent and the need for collective action.

He said AfriCAN had consistently used the occasion to engage young people and communities on nutrition, health and sustainable development issues.

“As we all know, May 25 is African Union Day, which is also the day AfriCAN has set aside to commemorate Africa Day,” he said.

Mr Bekoe disclosed that the commemoration would feature a series of discussions and engagements focused on environmental sustainability, water protection, sanitation and nutrition education.

He called on members of the “Good Nutrition Starts with Me” ambassadors initiative and the general public to actively participate in the campaign and support efforts aimed at building healthier and more sustainable communities across the country.
