Google has reopened its Hustle Academy entrepreneur training programme across three African markets, framing the relaunch around a $100 billion gap that African economies could capture from generative AI.
The free programme began registrations on 11 May 2026 in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria. It offers single-day bootcamps and 60-minute expert webinars for small-business owners, alongside Google Career Certificates in user experience design, data analytics, and IT support.
The $100 billion framing
The launch points to two third-party studies. McKinsey’s “Leading, not lagging: Africa’s gen AI opportunity” report estimates the continent’s potential value from generative AI at $100 billion. A separate SAP Africa survey, published in May 2025, found that 90% of organisations across the continent report that a lack of AI expertise is already constraining operations.
Africa’s digital economy is projected to expand from $34 billion in 2026 to $72 billion by 2031, according to figures cited in the Google announcement.
Tools and reach
The 2026 cohort joins a community of more than 20,000 graduates from earlier rounds. Sessions cover Google’s Gemini chat assistant and Nano Banana, the company’s image-generation tool, as well as business-skills modules.
“Don’t just watch the digital revolution happen, lead it,” wrote Siya Madikane, Google’s communications and public affairs manager for Africa, in the announcement. Google did not disclose programme funding or target enrolment numbers.
