The ceremony, hosted at KICC, highlighted individuals who have played key roles in leadership, philanthropy, and national development across the continent.

Which awards did Sonko and Raila win?

Sonko, who has built a reputation for his charitable work, was honoured for his long-standing support for vulnerable Kenyans, including bereaved families and those facing medical challenges.

During his time as Nairobi governor, he ran the Sonko Rescue Team, a humanitarian initiative that frequently intervened in emergencies and supported people in need. He continues to run the organisation even after his ouster.

Following the recognition, Sonko took to social media expressing gratitude and dedicating the award to Kenyans.

“I was deeply humbled and honoured to receive the Heroes of Africa Award in recognition of my philanthropy and humanitarian work… I dedicate this award to the people of Kenya, to every struggling youth, and to all humanitarian workers across Africa. Your strength and sacrifices inspire me every day. Above all, I thank God for His grace and favour. To God be the glory,” he said.

Raila, who passed away in October last year, was also honoured posthumously for his contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey.

Organisers noted his long political career and influence in shaping governance and democracy in the country.

During the ceremony, Music Copyright Society CEO Ezekiel Mutua presented the award, praising Raila’s legacy.

“The honour of Heroes of Africa 2026 is awarded to the late Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga. The award is given posthumously to Baba, also known as Agwambo,” Mutua said, joking that if the Bible were to be written again, there would be a chapter about Raila.
