Sam George – Minister of Communication and Digital Transformation.

Mr. Sam George, the Minister for Communication and Digital Transformation, has called on the MTN to confront the challenges of ensuring affordable access for all citizens, strengthen infrastructure resilience, including power reliability and fibre protection.

It is also to deepen cybersecurity and data protection, closing digital skills gaps, especially among youth, and advancing environmental sustainability in network expansion.

The Minister noted that these were systemic issues that required shared responsibility and collective solutions.

Mr. George said this at the 30th Anniversary launch of MTN’s operations in Ghana.

He added: “MTN’s thirty-year journey in Ghana tells a powerful story, that long-term commitment, aligned with national priorities, can transform economies and lives.”

He said the next-generation connectivity to drive industry and productivity, digital public services delivered at scale, SME growth powered by platforms and data, technology solutions for agriculture, health and education and greener, energy-efficient networks aligned with climate goals.

He added that emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud services, data analytics, and the Internet of Things would redefine productivity and service delivery.

According to him, continued collaboration between the government, regulators, and industry leaders would therefore be essential to unlock these opportunities adding, that the government would continue to work with the broader industry to unlock these opportunities in ways that were inclusive, secured and sustainable.

“Throughout the three decades, MTN’s technology-driven initiatives have significantly shaped the evolution of the telecommunications industry, fostering competition, improving service quality, and reinforcing Ghana’s position as a regional telecommunications leader in support of the Government’s digitalization and economic transformation agenda,” the Minister said.

He congratulated the MTN’s Board, Management, staff, regulators, policy makers, partners, media, stakeholders and subscribers, past and present, for the feat.

Mr. Stephen Blewett, the Chief Executive Officer MTN, said the anniversary was not just a corporate anniversary.

“This is a Ghanaian story—told through three decades of connection, progress and possibility. A story not about towers and cables, but about people whose lives have been transformed by the simple ability to connect,” Blewett said.

He recalled how a farmer stopped an MTN sales representative driving one of the yellow pickups, asking for a ride to his farm to collect food stuffs.

“The sales rep explained he was on official business, but the farmer insisted, claiming his status as an MTN user gave him the right to use the vehicle cementing how the company had become Ghanaian and individual brand,” the CEO added.
