The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has warned residents against the defacement, destruction, and unauthorised use of bus shelters and public transport infrastructure across the state.
The warning is contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Enugu by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Chinwendu Odumegwu.
According to the statement, the ministry notified the general public, businesses, organisations, advertisers, and residents that the defacement or illegal use of bus shelters and transport facilities was strictly prohibited.
The ministry said that the newly developed bus shelters and transport infrastructure were public assets built through significant government investment to create a cleaner, safer, more organised, and modern transportation system for residents.
It expressed concern over the increasing placement of posters, stickers, banners, handbills, and other unauthorised advertisements on bus shelters and related infrastructure across the state.
“Such acts are illegal, unacceptable, and will no longer be tolerated,” the statement said.
The ministry further directed that no posters, stickers, banners, advertisements, handbills, or public notices should be placed on any bus shelter or transport infrastructure without express approval from the state government through the ministry.
It warned that individuals, organisations, businesses, or agents found defacing, damaging, or illegally using public transport infrastructure would face sanctions, including heavy fines and possible legal prosecution.
The statement added that enforcement teams had been mandated to monitor transport infrastructure across the state to ensure compliance with the directive.
It said the directive formed part of the state government’s broader behavioural change campaign aimed at promoting civic responsibility, environmental cleanliness, orderliness, and respect for public infrastructure.
It noted that continued defacement of public infrastructure increases maintenance and cleaning costs, creates visual disorder, damages the aesthetics of the state, and undermines the vision of a modern and organised Enugu.
“The government, therefore, called on residents and stakeholders to support the protection, preservation, and responsible use of public assets for the collective benefit of all.
“Together, let us keep Enugu clean, organised, and beautiful,” it added.
