Unposted health officers threaten protest May 12 over delayed recruitment

A group of unposted environmental health professionals in Ghana has threatened to stage a demonstration on May 12 over delays in their recruitment, citing years of inaction despite repeated engagements with authorities.

The Unposted Environmental Health Officers and Assistants Association of Ghana said its members have been awaiting postings and financial clearance since 2021, warning that patience within the group is running out.

In a statement dated May 4, 2026, the association said a December 15, 2025, assurance by the Ministry of Local Government that their concerns would be presented to Cabinet has yet to yield any feedback.

“It has now been almost five months without any communication, and this silence is deeply concerning given the public health challenges Ghana faces,” the statement said.

The group also expressed frustration over what it described as unequal treatment in public sector recruitment, pointing to recent clearances granted in other sectors.

“We have been informed that the Ministry of Local Government cites constraints from the Ministry of Finance, that the fiscal budget space is too limited to grant us financial clearance. However, we note with disappointment that financial clearance has been granted for the recruitment of 20,000 teachers and 16,000 nurses. This disparity is unacceptable and has angered our members,” it said.

The association warned that it will proceed with a planned protest at the Ministry of Local Government if no action is taken.

“In light of this, we will hold a demonstration on May 12, 2026, at the Ministry of Local Government to demand answers and accountability,” it said, adding that members will continue to push for their employment if the situation remains unresolved.

The group argues that deploying environmental health officers is critical at a time when the country faces ongoing sanitation and public health challenges, and is urging the government to act swiftly.
