The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has cautioned Ghanaian nationals to exercise heightened vigilance following an ongoing protest in the Central Business District (CBD) of Johannesburg.
The demonstration, reportedly driven by concerns over unemployment and undocumented foreign nationals, has already disrupted traffic and business activities in parts of the city, raising fears of potential tensions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the High Commission warned that the situation carries a heightened risk, particularly for foreign nationals, and urged members of the Ghanaian community to take precautionary measures.
“Given the nature of the protest, there is a heightened risk of tension, particularly toward foreign nationals. Please advise all to exercise caution throughout the day.”
Avoid affected areas
The mission advised residents to avoid the Johannesburg CBD unless absolutely necessary and to remain indoors or in secure locations where possible.
“It is advisable to avoid the Johannesburg CBD unless travel there is absolutely necessary. Those who live in Johannesburg are urged to remain indoors or in secure locations and limit unnecessary movement,” the statement read.
Safety precautions
The advisory further urged individuals not to engage with protesters under any circumstances and to carry valid identification at all times. It also encouraged residents to maintain communication within their communities, especially with vulnerable individuals.
“Please stay in close communication with members of our community and check in on individuals who may be particularly vulnerable. Parents and guardians should ensure that children remain in safe environments and avoid travel through affected areas.”
Call for calm
The High Commission emphasised the importance of staying calm, relying on verified information and prioritising personal safety.
“Again, all are urged to remain calm and alert. The priority at all times is the safety and well-being of every member of our community,” it added.
