Landslide Triggered by Heavy Rains Blocks Iten–Kabarnet Road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has urged motorists to avoid a section of the Iten–Kabarnet Road near Kolol after a landslide blocked the carriageway, the latest disruption linked to persistent heavy rainfall across the country.

In an advisory issued on Wednesday, KeNHA confirmed that the collapse occurred due to saturated soils from the ongoing downpours.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority wishes to notify motorists and the public that, due to ongoing heavy rainfall across the country, a landslide has occurred along the Iten–Kabarnet Road near Kolol, blocking the affected section,” the authority stated.

The affected stretch is now impassable, with clearance teams working to restore normal traffic flow on the strategically important highway connecting parts of the Rift Valley.

Motorists who have not yet set off have been advised to use the alternative Iten–Eldoret–Eldama Ravine–Kabarnet route. Those already on the road have been told to exercise extreme caution and follow directions from police officers and traffic marshals at the scene.

KeNHA said it is closely monitoring the situation and will issue further updates. “The Authority appreciates your cooperation as it works to ensure the safety of all road users,” it added.

The incident comes amid broader warnings from the Kenya Meteorological Department, which has forecast continued rainfall across much of the country from April 28 to May 4.

Significant downpours are expected in Nairobi, the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley itself, the Coast, and parts of Northeastern Kenya, with heavy rainfall events likely in some areas.

Motorists planning travel in the region are encouraged to check real-time updates from KeNHA or local authorities before starting their journeys.
