The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspected gang leader and one accomplice in connection with the robbery attack that led to the death of Berekum Chelsea F.C. footballer, Dominic Frimpong.

A police source indicates that the arrests followed a joint intelligence-led operation by specialised police teams aimed at tracking down the perpetrators behind the deadly incident.

The suspects, identified as Mohammed Ahmed, popularly known as “I Can Do,” and Bawa Gideon, were apprehended on April 15, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation at Atimatim in Kumasi.

The operation involved officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate, Anti-Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters, as well as the Ashanti South and Ashanti Regional Police Commands.

Police said the suspects attempted to flee and opened fire on officers before they were subdued and arrested.

The attack occurred on April 12, 2026, along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District.

Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a special intelligence team to track down those responsible.

A search conducted after the arrest led to the retrieval of a pistol with ammunition, BB cartridges, pepper spray, mobile phones, and other items believed to be linked to the robbery.

During interrogation, Mohammed Ahmed reportedly admitted involvement in several robbery operations, including the attack on the Berekum Chelsea team, as well as other incidents at Nkawie and Fufuso.

He also named three accomplices—Dauda, Huefe, and A.T.—who are currently on the run.

Police say Mohammed Ahmed is currently receiving treatment under guard at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while Bawa Gideon remains in custody assisting with investigations.

The three other suspects have been declared wanted, and the police are appealing to the public for information that could lead to their arrest.

Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all members of the gang, adding that the suspects will soon be put before court to face the full rigours of the law.

The Police Command also commended officers involved in the operation and expressed gratitude to members of the public whose cooperation contributed to the breakthrough.
